How do geniuses make their groundbreaking discoveries and establish new ways of thinking for the rest of humanity? Is it possible for us to identify their extraordinary ways of thinking and highly creative approaches and employ them in our own lives? Shai Tubali and Theresa Bauerlein, editor-in-chief of the German news website Krautreporter and a Random House bestselling author, have embarked on a philosophical journey into the hearts and life stories of ten thinkers from different fields, focusing on the processes that preceded their breakthroughs, in an attempt to solve the riddle of the genius mind. They present, with skill and humor, biographical anecdotes and penetrating insights, as well as suggesting thought experiments and exercises for the reader to try. The ten thinkers are:
  • Albert Einstein (Physics)
  • Friedrich Nietzsche (Philosophy)
  • Sigmund Freud (Psychology)
  • Barbara McClintock (Biology)
  • Leonardo Da Vinci (Art and Scientific Invention)
  • Giordano Bruno (Cosmology)
  • Socrates (Philosophy)
  • Charles Darwin (Biology)
  • Hannah Arendt (Political Science)
  • Jiddu Krishnamurti (Philosophy)
This book, which has already appeared in German, Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese, is an inspiring process of revelation in which the reader is invited to play an active role.

We can intentionally direct our thinking to focus on universal questions, to generalize our outlook, and to educate the brain to live with a great question for a certain period of time. We can learn to engage in daring thought experiments—boldly using our imaginative spirit—and to put aside conventional knowledge in order to obtain a fresh perspective on questions that have supposedly been completely resolved. We can even learn how to meditate on nature and the cosmos, encouraging the development of a “love affair with the world.” Acquiring certain qualities, such as listening to and looking at everyday phenomena with fresh ears and eyes, not taking that which seems obvious for granted, forever staying open to new and challenging information and impressions, and freely questioning all fixed positions and dogmas, could help us to cultivate the ever-young quality of the genius mind. Most importantly, we should feel that we are capable of doing all of these things, that the gateways to new ways of thinking are open to us. If there’s one thing we can learn from geniuses, it is that our thought is an amazing tool with which we can become totally free to explore everything and anything.
